One of the best parts of blogging is good interaction with other bloggers. For most of the time we have been blogging we have been blessed to have many helpful comments from A_Boleyn who has her own blog (Cooking is Fun…Really!!…). I recently posted about Coffee Ice Cream; in the comments she mentioned Dalgona. Lynn and I didn’t know much about it so we did a little research. We found it was definitely something that we wanted to try.
Dalgona is a simple whipped coffee that uses instant coffee. The only ingredients are instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water. The idea really intrigued me; how could those ingredients turn into anything. Lynn found a blog post at Jessica in the Kitchen that I used as my recipe and instructions.
I decided to make the Dalgona out of the same Trung Nguyen G7 instant coffee that I used in my ice cream.
Making this is really simple. Put equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water in a bowl (I used 4 tablespoons of each). Then mix at high speed with a hand mixer until it thickens. After a couple of minutes it will turn into something like meringue.
When I started, I honestly didn’t expect much to happen. I was really surprised when I ended up with a firmed up end product. I was even able to hold the bowl upside down like I have seen on The Great British Bake-Off and it stayed in the bowl.
I ate some of it straight from the bowl and it was pretty strong. We ended up using it all in coffee drinks. The amount I made was supposed to be 4 servings so I used that as my guide. I did 1 cup of milk with 1/4th of the Dalgona I made. I mixed them together and added it to ice to make a cold coffee drink. At some point in the future I think I will try to make a hot drink out of it, and maybe add it to ice cream.
This is something I highly recommend trying if you really like coffee. I know we liked it and will definitely do some more with it in the future.
