Josh has always loved magic shell on his ice cream and the kids have inherited that love! I like it too but not as much as they do. If you’re a fan of magic shell, you probably know about the kind you can buy at the store.

Now there are eight people in our family, and that means that one of these bottles of magic shell does not last long. So I was very happy when I found out how easy it is to make magic shell at home!

I use this recipe at Live Well. Bake Often, but I’m going to post a short recipe since I modified it slightly.

First, you need a bag of chocolate chips. All of us really like dark chocolate so I used a 10 ounce bag of Nestle dark chocolate chips.

The 10 ounce bag fills about 2 dry measuring cups, which worked great. Since I was going to store the magic shell in a mason jar, I just poured the bag of chocolate chips right into the mason jar. The chips will fill the jar close to the top, but that will change once you start melting the mixture in the microwave.

Next, place 3 tablespoons of solid coconut oil on top of the chocolate chips. I like to use the refined coconut oil for magic shell since it doesn’t have the coconut flavor. It will look like a mess or like it will make a mess.

Just make sure all the coconut oil is within the walls of the mason jar or you might end up with a mess once it melts!

Then, microwave the jar of chocolate chips and coconut oil for 20 to 30 seconds. Be careful as the jar and the mixture may be hot! The oil will melt and the chips will be soft, but you’re not done yet. Add another 3 tablespoons of coconut oil to the mason jar, then microwave it again for another 20 to 30 seconds. This might be enough to melt everything together. Stir the mixture with a small spatula after microwaving and if you have some chocolate chips that aren’t quite melted, microwave the jar again for 10 seconds at a time, stirring after each 10 seconds. You’ll know that you’re done when you stir the mixture and it’s smooth with no chocolate chip chunks.

I make chocolate magic shell so much that I have a mason jar labeled just for that and reuse it. It stores fine for a few months in a cabinet or pantry (if it lasts that long!). If it solidifies during storage, just microwave the jar for 10 seconds at a time until it has melted to the consistency you want. Make sure not to microwave it for too long or it will be too hot to use! Or you’ll do what I’ve done before and burn your chocolate!

Homemade Chocolate Magic Shell

Ingredients

  • 2 cup or one 10-12 ounce bag of chocolate chips
  • 6 tbsp refined coconut oil, solid

Instructions

  • Pour 2 cups or one 10-12 ounce bag of chocolate chips into a pint mason jar. Measure 3 tablespoons of coconut oil onto the top of the chocolate chips. Make sure to place the coconut oil so it does not melt onto the outside of the jar. Microwave the mason jar of chocolate chips and coconut oil, uncovered, for 20 to 30 seconds. Be careful as the jar and the mixture may be hot! Measure another 3 tablespoons of coconut oil into the jar. Microwave another 20 to 30 seconds. Stir the mixture together. If there are still chunks of chocolate chips, microwave the jar another 10 seconds and stir the mixture until smooth. If needed, continue microwaving at 10 second intervals, stirring after each interval. Put the lid on the mason jar and allow to cool slightly before spooning onto ice cream. Or store in a cabinet or a pantry until ready to use. If the chocolate magic shell solidifies during storage, microwave uncovered for 10 seconds at a time until it is melted.
